The refiner is one of basic machines used in test and research area of pulp and paper industry and other related industries. It turns wood chips into pulp, conditions the pulp, and makes pulp of synthetic fibers, glass fibers and carbon fibers. With this machine, it is easy to perform processing into fiber and fibrillation of various polymers in diverse fields. Its shape is the same as the practical refiner used in the manufacturing plant, producing the same quality of the actual final product.

The pattern and material of the plate has a close relationship with not only pulp quality but also available feed amount of chip and specific power consumption. The pattern and material are selected on the basis of experience and operation record. The plate is composed of two sections: breaking zone where chips are roughly broken, and refining zone for complete defibration and beating. The plate is made of high-chrome stainless steel. One set includes six plates. Three plates on each side (rotational and fixed sides) forms one segment. The photo shows the shapes.

Since there is a keen demand for resource saving and no pollution in the world, a remarkable advance has been made recently in mechanical pulp, especially TMP (thermomechanical pulp). Much information on TMP is provided globally in the field of research and development. It is undeniable that TMP is more excellent than stone groundwood pulp (GP). So, TMP plants have been constructed and operated in many paper mills in the world. To satisfy the requirement of the pulp and paper industry, we Kumagai Riki developed in 1975 this refiner in collaboration with Japan Pulp and Paper Research Institute, Inc. which has advanced pulp preparation technology, on the basis of the conventional KRK normal pressure refiner. Set in the laboratory the same conditions as those in the practical plant operation, and steam chips for a short time, and perform pressurized refining. It features ease of operation and excellent reproducibility.

This machine is widely used as a standard tester per JIS and TAPPI. Unlike the conventional beater, the roll is fixed, and a constant load is applied on the head plate, thereby constantly giving a uniform beating pressure. It is excellent especially in free beating and wet beating. So it is very effective for quality management.

Like the No.2505, this machine is used for beating pulp and plant fiber. Addition of fillers and chemicals during beating significantly contaminates pulp suspension liquid. The machine is divided by partition plates, and a wash drum lined with wire mesh on the circumference is set at a part of the rotary tank of beater. The wash drum is rotated slowly by a driving device to discharge contamination in the slurry.

The PFI mill is a beater featuring a high reproducibility, used for studying the relationship between beating degree of pulp and physical properties. This machine is basically an experimental beater widely used in the preparation stage of paper making. Beating mechanism: a constant load is given to the pulp circulating in between stainless steel roll and cylindrical mill house, which are rotating with a constant difference in circumferential velocity, applying mechanical effects such as shear and compression, thereby performing beating by frictional forces between fibers.
The number of rotations is read on the counter. The beating degree is evaluated by the freeness tester.

Like the standard type, this machine is a beater featuring high reproducibility. The rolls are moved upward and downward by simple operation of a push button switch. Beating pressure is applied and released, being interlocked with motor rotation. The beating time is set in advance by number of rotations of the rolls. When the set rotation number is reached, the machine automatically stops. Operation process is automated, thereby alleviating the workload of operator and offering high work efficiency.

A considerable amount of waste paper is used as low cost material in the age requiring resource and energy saving in the pulp and paper industry. Almost all paper kinds are recycled, including newspaper, paperboard, wood free paper and paper for office automation machines. The essential point of waste paper pulping is effective breaking by efficient use of power. This high-consistency disintegrator is used to study this topic. It is most suitable to investigate technological and economic use of waste paper in the laboratory.

For resource and energy saving, reuse of waste paper is promoted. The primary steps of reuse of waste paper are pulping and deinking. After chemical is added to the pulp material such as waste paper, this machine heats, agitates and processes the material, to chemically and mechanically change the material into pulp at normal pressure. This machine is also used for defibration of fibers.
