History

In 1927, the previous owner Shichijiro Kumagai founded Kumagai Seisakusho in Kanda Sakuma-cho, Tokyo to start manufacture of viscometers, flash point testers, and other test equipment for petroleum products. The production base was moved to the present location in Nerima, Tokyo, in 1941. Management organization was restructured in 1944, and Kumagai Riki Kogyo Co., Ltd. was established. With the opportunities accompanying dismantling of military production and the rise of consumer industries following the war, in 1949 we shifted our business activities to production of new paper pulp testers. This same year the founder died suddenly, and at the bequest of his predecessor, Hiroshi Kumagai succeeded to his position.

Since modern manufacturing facilities were introduced in 1969, we have been attempting to improve new plant productivity and machine precision. In 1983, with the objective of increasing mechanical function and reliability of developed products, we built a laboratory adjacent to the factory, and have been repeatedly performing experiments with users, always endeavoring to produce even better products.

We have been manufacturing paper pulp testers for over half a century, and have grown as a tester manufacturer able to offer a full line-up of products for paper pulp production at the laboratory, ranging from producing machine of chips from wood, pulping machine, beater, paper-making machine, paper processor to printing tester, paper physical property tester, etc. At present, these products are not only applicable to paper pulp production, but have also been employed in various fields for development of new materials.

In keeping with the demands of the current computer age, AutoScan, a full automatic paper properties testing machine for speeding up measurements, improving precision, and reducing labor was developed in 1997. We anticipate it will be utilized in many current production sites.

January 1927 Kumagaya Seisakusho was founded in Motosakuma Town, Kanda, Tokyo.
March 1941 Sakuradai Factory was established at the current location for expansion of production.
May 1944 The management organization was reorganized to streamline tasks.
Kumagai Riki Kogyo Co.,Ltd was established.
June 1949 The president Shichijiro Kumagai passed away suddenly. Hiroshi Kumagai assumed the position of president.
September 1949 Product lines were shifted from petroleum testers to pulp and paper testers.
September 1952 Ginza branch office was opened.
March 1969 A new factory was established along with the expansion of activities, introducing leading-edge machinery.
April 1972 To expand operations, a headquarters building was constructed.
October 1983 The laboratory building was established for development of new products.
May 1985 Development of LA (Laboratory Automation)system and proposals for streamlining of research activities.
November 1997 Development of an AutoScan, an automated system for measurement of paper properties.
March 2005 The president is succeeded by Takeshi Kumagai.

Contents of business

The products of Kumagai Riki can be broadly divided into three categories.

Testers of paper physical properties

They are the testers according to the testing methods of paper and board properties specified by the Standards of JIS, ISO, TAPPI, etc., including a thickness meter, tensile strength tester (to evaluate the strength of a paper when subject to a tensile force), a burst strength tester and compression tester (for raw papers serving as a standard of strength for corrugated boards), a smoothness tester, an air permeability tester . There is also a specimen cutter which is designed to cut papers to desired sizes for different testers.

Testers for coating, printing and processing

The raw paper is transformed to products through various sets of processing, such as sizing processing to impregnate the raw paper’s surface with sizing agent, coating processing to apply coating colors, calender coating processing to gloss the surface. The devices of producing the papers above on a trial basis at the laboratory are a test size press, high speed coater and test calender. We offer a variety of printability testers to evaluate the printability of papers.

Tester for pulp and chips

The paper making process consists of a chipping process to grind the wood into chips, a pulping process to transform the raw material into single fibers mechanically or chemically. There are also other processes for refining such as cleaning, selection and breaching. As the cooking system to be used in the process of pulp making, there is an autoclave and as a beating system, refiners and PFI mill. For the purpose to make papers from manufactured pulp, there is a paper making system composed of a disintegrator, sheet machine, press and dryer.
