Along with upgrading of paper quality and diversification of paper kinds, the requirements for paper quality are diversified, and especially for printability, this trend is remarkable. Generally, the size press is provided with two rollers to coat size liquid on the surface to increase the surface strength of a wet paper at the press part of the paper making machine, after dewatering press, or to improve printability. The inclined type is more effective and of lower cost than the conventional inner sizing type using beater additive. In addition, the size press is widely used at the process of on-machine coating for application of primer for topcoat, bearing an important role to improve paper quality and printability. This test size press can simulate as many conditions as possible of a practical paper making machine, using an excellent system with ease of handling, and ensuring high reproducibility. The mechanism is designed as follows; this is an inclined type press with two rollers of special material being laid at an inclination of 35 degrees. From the liquid tank, the size liquid is fed through a pipe onto the rollers, forming a dam of liquid between them. Between the rollers in such a state, is inserted the paper sheet semi-dried or dried (sizeless), then immediately the paper sheet is pressed in the roll nip.
As an option, there is a model equipped with a coating-liquid heating and circulating system and with a device to humidify the press roll.

The size solution for surface sizing penetrates and stays in the paper surface while it circulates in the group of rollers of a paper-making machine. During this process, gummy aggregations form in the size liquid, affected by the contact heat of continuous paper and mechanical shear force. After winding and drying, such gummy substance forms defects on the paper surface. There are two types of machines, A and B models. The model A is a tester applying nip pressure on the rollers, with a pump to let the size liquid circulate from the constant temperature tank. With this machine, it is possible to reproduce the conditions of an actual paper making machine for the user to know in advance the stability and mixing of ingredients.

The model B is a simplified type to take out size liquid from the pan through the lower roll and introduce it into the nip between two rollers. By so doing, the desired shear force is produced, and the observer can monitor and evaluate change in state of the liquid. This tester is also used as a simplified roll coater for the coating machine.

The test mangle is widely used for impregnation processing of papers and woven textiles, capable of adjusting the gap between the rollers with the right and left screws. This tester is designed to apply pressure uniformly on the right and left sides, most suitable for operations in the laboratory.
There are two types, manual with handle and motor-driven.

Along with the progress in coating technology, especially with diversification of coating types, high speed processing and upgrading of quality, coating material needs to meet severe requirements in flowability, leveling and stability to various outer factors. Consequently, flowability tests for coating materials in the range of high speeds are indispensable to monitor problems at the high speed blade coater and roll coater. With the KRK high shearing viscosimeter, it is possible to faithfully reproduce the operation of a practical machine in the laboratory, and to grasp behaviors at speeds of 1 x 100,000/second, encompassing a wide range of elemental researches, such as solving troubles and development of new coating materials. This machine is designed to test not only the materials in the category of high speed and high shearing, as well as those of low speed and high viscosity, with a special function (optional) of low revolutions, 1/10 speed of the standard high speed (a range of 0 to 220rpm) which enables to test various kinds of materials in speed and shearing. The measurement ranges up to 4,000mPa・s liquids. This machine features an electronically controlled stepless speed change, allowing linear deceleration and acceleration up to the maximum speed of 8,800rpm. The machine body is installed on a stable base, with almost no vibrations. This is a viscosimeter having an inner rotating cylinder, with a bob and a cup of high precision. Viscosity torque is detected by a strain gauge, and graphically displayed by the XY recorder via an amplifier. The system with a computer is able to calculate viscosity coefficient and shearing speed that are continually changing to display plastic viscosity and leveling index.

Development of coating materials requires preparation of coating materials. This machine can be used to disperse pigments rich in solid, designed for versatile uses such as paper making, production of inks, paints and adhesive agents. The mixer’s saw-toothed impeller rotates forming a strong swirling flow to make the particles impact and rub against each other for effective distribution. The structure is simple and rugged, so it is possible to operate without trouble even under severe conditions and the user can do his or her work without failure. The container can be easily taken out, lifting the mixing head by turning the handle.

This coater applies coating material on the paper or paperboard with a certain thickness. With this machine, coating operation is very easy. The rubber tube is inflated uniformly with compressed air, and the blade (doctor) is pressed onto a backup roll around which the sheet receiving coating material is wound. In this status, coating is made by turning the handle. With a relief valve on the side of the machine, air pressure can be regulated appropriately reading the pressure gauge to secure the desired amount of coating material.

This machine is an improved coater for experimental use evolved from the manual blade coater, offering better reproducibility and operability. This machine finds various uses, especially for the research of behaviors of paint at high-speed operations and formulation. The contact angle of the blade is changeable in a range of 0 to 30 degrees to allow for changes in coating thickness.
